LBC finds from sunday AM~Washoe (?) basket-early 20th century, the asymmetrical design, and weaving quality is beautiful on this one/Zuni thunderbird stone to stone inlay bolo circa 1940-50's-has the early soldered wire slide on the back (year of the bolo)/Navajo ring 1950-70's-ingot silver and spiderweb turquoise, unidentified hallmark on band-this thing has a satisfying sculptural weight & balance and a lot of wear- you can see the \\\/// line on the side of the bands are almost gone.

~a larger pin than most of the others I have, and more intricate stone work, it's hard to see in these shots but the bezel and stones are really worn down on the hand tips and crown-this piece was loved/worn well by it's original owner.

Got super lucky for getting one year older this year-Les went straight to the Wizard for these deep finds. Navajo bracelets-both dating between 1890-1910 hand forged ingot coin silver-the first one being either a leaf or snake design...I've seen this motif on early pieces sometimes surrounded by a paisley type border-I like the subtle rounded quality of the form having been punched out from the back. Second one is a solid pulled ingot wire with either chiseled or filed lines and punched o's with repeated punched design at the terminals-it's heavy-you can see where the silver has been folded on the interior.

Two things snagging my mind from the weekend...the Navajo pin display on shrimpo jacket is a good sculpture~the Northwest Coast folk-core leather cap is high wizard gear...I'm almost there but the point to the hat is a sticking point (but it does have a salmon swimming through a portal split over two panels).

Handmade family of wooden/painted boats with carry case from PCC this week. This is one of my favorite all time finds, so much love has gone into these things-the perfect balance of rudimentary craft/woodworking, practicality and personal project pride (PPP). The way everything is accommodated in the case-held in by canvas covered blocks and the way all the colors and construction of the boats compliment each other has been driving me a little nuts-something kinda Calder/Bauhaus/H.C Westerman about this thing.

Jayme Odgers, an artist and designer friend of Shire's who first met Peter round 1978 at a Wet magazine party in Malibu, has said that Peter's works "bridge the terrain between art/design, function and non-utilitarianism. They are gorgeously outrageous. They smear the professional and personal.

We went back to the Pollock Krasner house and studio with the Beach clan last week~it's a beautiful and modest tomb of life and work, the house and studio sharing an economy of scale and efficiency and the simple nature of the property adding something to it's remote or isolated quality.

It seems like very little was changed since the couple first moved to Springs, with furniture and fixtures Krasner chose...(the iron bench she aquired in college and the pedestal sink upstairs, found on the street in New York)...much like the Eames house the sensibility of the house seems intact.

*The glass pieces in the tins are leftovers from Krasner's (awesome) mosaic table-built into the hoop of a cart wheel found on the property.

**I think of the Eames house as more of a reflection of Ray's tastes and collections-and both houses can't help but seeming like something of a set despite attempts to leave them as be/was etc...Krasner lived and worked in springs for almost 30 years after Pollock's death, and Ray a decade after Charles in the Eames house.

***Krasner and Ray Eames (then Kaiser) studied together at the Hofmann school where Ray's nickname was 'Buddha' for her calm demeanor. (:-o)
