Navajo reverse weave herringbone twill saddle blanket, German town wool early 20th century-possibly earlier due to the use of cotton warp thread. This is an eye dazzler of the more subtle kind with the change of direction creating the herringbone pattern, again some selvedge edge wear from use, but holding together due to the density of the weave. Navajo blanket circa 1920's-30's, storm pattern/variation- lighter weave, homespun dyed wool judging by the variation in tone over color blocked areas. There is an attractive wonkiness-speed evident in how this piece has been woven with a design/construction trail easily followed. Some unravelling of the selvedge edge but otherwise in great condition-found at the Rose Bowl this weekend.

Navajo saddle blanket (or child's blanket) early 20th century, from PCC this month. The irregularity of the stripes, subtle variation in yarn dye and the density of the weave all contribute to the awesomeness of this piece. I also like the extent of lazy lines present given the small size of the blanket. I need to buy from more vendors who constantly refer to me as son.

Bone/Head

The most recent Inuit carving to enter the hold- this piece incorporating the external shape and surface of the whale bone section into the form of the head. Beautifully crude, solid and heavy with saw traces and rasp lines from initial blocking out and shaping. C 1950's-70's.

A Girl's Got To Do

Michele O'Marah at Cottage Home, LA- opens this weekend. Details.

O'Marah has created three new video works that are re-created scenes from the Pamela Anderson film Barb Wire (1996). In addition to the artist's probe of the corporatized, MTV version of a revolutionary hero, O'Marah's efforts serve as deconstructive analyses of the film's representation of femininity. Hiring a diverse range of professional actresses to fill Anderson's stiletto high heels, O'Marah's "Barb" takes various forms. Working with each actress, O'Marah's video works take on the most sexually explicit scenes from the film and offer a variety of interpretations of the lead role: campy, flirty, and sexy. The one-dimensional, Barbie Doll of a character is given a depth, sexuality, and humor that is lacking in the original.

Late 80's/90's Outdoor Products leather bottomed Cordura pack, nice customizing- may have to trade out Nertherlands (WTF) for some vintage Dodger/Brewers representation. Picked up at the PCC flea from an X pro skater (Dogtown) from Venice who was also selling a lifetime supply of decks.

Incredible Navajo blanket at the PCC-well outside the budget. Memory sticks are the new museums.

PCC/1/10-Bowls

Mexican low fire-terracotta hand painted and glazed bowls, 1950's-60's. There's a simplicity and economy evident in how these are thrown and painted (folk production pottery), they all have the stilt points from their stacking in the kiln, minimal trimming and clean up. Beautiful. Found at PCC yesterday.
