Raising Hell In Heaven

It's been a year since Okie Adams passed on, and it's still hard to resolve the loss of such a charitable, wise and hilarious man. The night we first met Okie, my friends Mike, Ross and I, sat in his living room, in the few available spaces not covered in boxes (of an unsorted living), and watched as he performed a divining ritual with hand made instruments, locating a stream deep below the house. He then introduced us to his incredible hand made Banjo's, and a condensed (and imbelished) narrative of his life...part of which involved being the only man that could truely satisfy Rita Hayworth!...they just don't make them like Okie Adams anymore.x

Today's Japanese textile inventory from the Rose Bowl, I traded a Lee 1940's Coca Cola uniform, and some stray denim for these great pieces. Woman's or child's hand woven Noragi for Lesley, the Kasuri pattern/color is beautiful. Hemp fragment/scarf, a richer green than depicted here, some nice boro patch details. Large (7 ft tall) Indigo layered panel, made from recycled cotton, perhaps to fit around a pice of furniture or corner?.

Rose Bowl November finds. U.S ARMY-P.O.W Indigo denim chore jacket, with lower pockets/flaps and donut hole buttons, 1940...my new favorite (read O.J.D, Obsessive Jacket Disorder). Canvas split leg work apron, 1950's, designated potters wheel attire. Really Blue Cordura day pack, West Ridge Designs, Portland, early 80's? (ok, this bag alone won't make me Michael Cera, but we keep seeing him sporting awesome backpacks in Los Feliz). USN woolen Guernsey, 1940's, woven tight and twisted to repel rain/spray. Message buttons...a market gift from Jed/thanks.

Around The Horn

Okay, I'm a late comer here, I have no idea how the music of Souled American eluded me for so long, but suffice to say I'm in deep now. It's almost impossible to imagine early Palace Brothers, Songs Ohia and Codeine etc, existing prior to the Souled American sound. There's an endlessness to their music, and a gradual and beautiful reduction (of sound and band members) across their six album discography, riding high on the country tractor whilst the air is slowly let out of the tires. A compilation of the first four albums (88-92) released by tUMULt is available through Aquarius, the individual albums, released by Rough Trade, may be easier located in the UK. Thanks to papa John (Ir) and papa Jon (LA) for the word.

The music will not make you dance or sing along or do some stupid air-guitar thing. It fulfills music’s simplest function: it makes you listen—compulsively and tirelessly, spellbound and uncertain.

For those voting in California, please support the right for same sex couples to marry, and vote NO on Proposition 8- which would overturn this fundamental right by writing discrimination into California's constitution. It's a straight up civil rights issue, so if you know people voting in California, friends, relatives, co-workers, please spread the good word! More info here.

507xx

1950's Levi's 507 xx jean jacket...younger sibling to the 506xx, and referred to as a second edition jacket. Distinguished from a first, by the two pockets, and button tab's at the back, instead of a buckle back...still has the pleats, the big 'E' tag, lemon stitching and selvage detail on the inside. Worn in nicely and delivered to me from the United States Of Ebay (via italy).

Ride The Skunk

PCC Tomorrow

It's raining today, the PCC is tomorrow, rain can mean good or bad things for the flea market customer, rainy day bargains, less people, less stalls...for me it may mean finding the hood attachment for my Barbour before setting out as usual...a favorite find from last year above.
